As suggested, I completely uninstalled both 2.0.5 and 2.2.2. I then removed all files found related to gnucash. I then cleanly installed 2.2.2. The error still persisted. Meantime, Dave Reiser replied on the gnucash-user list that fix r16766 should probably fix the error. I applied only the changes from r16766, and sure enough, that has resolved this crash of the scheduled transaction function. I will attempt to mark this issue as FIXED and close it out.
