GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 504705
print fails with Brother HL-5050
Last modified: 2012-03-07 11:34:02 UTC
Please describe the problem: When I try to print a file with Eye of Gnome using a Brother HL-5050 printer the result is a sheet of paper with the following error being printed: ERROR NAME: ioerror COMMAND: fill OPERAND STACK: The same image files print fine using Gimp, Openoffice, Firefox or by other means. I am using the foomatic/postscipt driver (recommended) and the printer is on parallel:/dev/lp0. This bug has been reported in the Ubuntu bug reporting system: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/175449 Steps to reproduce: 1. Open a image file in Eye of Gnome. 2. Print the file. 3. Print fails. Actual results: A sheep of paper is printed that says the following: ERROR NAME: ioerror COMMAND: fill OPERAND STACK: Expected results: I expect the image to be printed. Does this happen every time? Yes, every time. Other information: This actually not a new problem. I can remember this bug as far back as Ubuntu Edgy. I need this capability more now so I am reporting the problem. I noticed that both report on this bug on the Ubuntu site are by folks with Brother printers and both are using the same driver. On my system here all printing works perfectly except for Eye of Gnome. Thanks.
EOG uses GtkPrint to handle printing, so this is likely a bug there. Could you test if you can print with similar settings in other software that uses GtkPrint, like evince?
Also, note the following launchpad bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/172550 It describes how the large Postscript output that is currently generated can "overload" a printer's postscript interpreter. That is probably related to bug 394260.
Claudio, As requested I tried printing using Evince. I opening a .pdf file in Evince and told it to print the first page. I got the same error as reported above just as you suspected: ERROR NAME; ioerror COMMAND; fill OPERAND STACK;
Felix, I looked at the bug you pointed out but it appears that bug has been traced to specific hp printers. My printer is a Brother HL-5050.
Moving to GTK+. Thanks for your report.

Nick, Gareth: Is this still a problem with recent printer drivers and gtk version 2.24 or 3.2?
NEEDINFO as per my last question.
