GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 503464
The user should be able to set Ekiga as the default SIP url handler on the desktop
Last modified: 2008-09-15 18:33:39 UTC
Hi, This is probably for the prefs and the new druid: Under Linux, Ekiga set this key (/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/sip/command) in gconf to allow link in firefox or any other application for the desktop to run Ekiga when clicking a sip:URI. Libpurple (pidgin -> purple-url-handler "%s") and maybe other SIP client do the same. As a result, this particular URL (sip:URI) is not always handle by Ekiga. e.g. if you install pidgin, it will grab the sip:URI, without telling the user it does and Ekiga will stop showing up when clicking a sip:URI. The user will be confused, and may search in the wrong place (e.g. in firefox instead of gconf). Under windows, as reported in bug #499350, Ekiga don't register to the windows registery, thus this doesn't work at all. But once this feature will be added, Ekiga will probably have the very same problem: other applications may handle the sip:URI. I think it will be good for Ekiga to ask the user in the druid if Ekiga should handle sip:URIs by default for the desktop. Maybe an option in prefs for that too is useful. This will greatly help the integration of Ekiga in the "web 2.0" (haha) and in the desktop. Regards, Yannick
