For what it's worth, this is on an Ubuntu Gutsy "live persistent" USB which shows some signs of flaking out. Perhaps thus not worth too much of the attention of Gnome maintainers. What concretely happened here was that -- for some reason -- the Gnome panels disappeared when I clicked on the "log out" button in the upper right corner, and I haven't seen them since, even over a couple of reboots. (Also some preferences were lost.)
