This function cannot be called on a channel with NULL encoding.

Correct version:
"Reads a unicode character from GIOChannel. This function cannot be called on a channel with NULL encoding."

and

"Writes a unicode character to GIOChannel. This function cannot be called on a channel with NULL encoding."
