Steps to reproduce:
1. Using Mint xcfe 3.0 (based on ubuntu 7.04)
2. create new file
3. try to save file. Typing a single character for the name produces crash

a) looks like gtk is mis-built against scim ...
b) what's that single character?  Does every single-character file name cause the crash?
c) It sounds like you need to take this distro-specific problem downstream to Mint.
