Description John Sullivan 2001-09-10 01:31:35 UTC
(This bug was spun off from a comment in somewhat related bug 42168.)

It'd be nice if the trash icon, below ``trash'' had it's size in the same way
that most directories have the number of files they contain. I don't worry
about the trash 'till it's got a few MB in it. This would make it easier to use.

(As a possible extention, the user could select a cutoff size that displayed
a very-overflowing bin when the size crossed the threshold.)

------- Additional Comments From sullivan@eazel.com 2001-03-27 06:45:28 ----

I think a conscious decision was made (by Arlo? I'm not sure) to only
show one line of captions on the desktop, even when other locations
show more than one. I'm not sure what the rationale was. Assigning this
to Arlo for consideration.

------- Additional Comments From bfrantzda@hmc.edu 2001-03-27 11:12:00 ----

That may be. I'm not sure how easy it would be to have the trash have a contense
size as opposed to a number of items, but I think most users would prefer to
know how much space things are taking up than how many files there are.

I'll consider...

Changing to "old" target milestone for all bugs laying around with no milestone set.

Fixing this is not trivial since the trash icon on the desktop is just
a.desktop file. in my opinion an elegant solution to this would be to
use a symlink on the desktop to the trash: folder instead of the
.desktop folder, would create some other niceties too.
Comment 4 Mark Finlay 2003-02-03 19:50:59 UTC
Does trash even need to be a file or folder? I don't know if it is
possible to syslink to a uri. I'd love if trash could be a meta-
item. Don't know how possible that is though.
Comment 5 Matthias Warkus 2003-08-15 14:24:09 UTC
Anyway it's no good the trash can looks overflowing as soon as there's
a single zero-byte file inside. This has been criticised as one of the
most pertinent design errors in Windows and MacOS before and is one of
the reasons why trash can's don't work with typical users because
they're scared by the full trash and empty it immediately after
deleting anything.

The trash can should look overflowing only as soon as it *is*
overflowing. A sensible limit would be 5% or 10% of the $HOME
filesystem capacity.
Comment 6 David Christian Berg 2004-01-11 23:25:40 UTC
Hmm, I'd prefer the trash to actually show that there are files in it.
If it is possible I'd go with the option of using more than two images
(empty, full) to display how much the trash is used. The user would
set a limit which would indicate 100%. If this limit is reached, the
trash appears to be full, if it is exceeded, the trash will have a
overflowing icon.
Beneath the limit I'd suggest that there are 4 to 5 different
pictures, indicating how much of the limit is used.

Wow, this bug is so old - please let me bring it back to your mind. The way
trash works is so stupid. I do fully agree with #5 and #6.

At the moment the tooltip of the trash-applet shows how many files are in your
trash can. This Information is so useless, we want to know how many mb or even
gb it uses...

Very old bug.
Simply: "ping!".

Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
