GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 474222
Remove the ctrl-t shortcut for trash
Last modified: 2008-04-07 16:37:09 UTC
Currently there is a default shortcut for moving objects to trash which is ctrl-t. This is unnecessary, since there is already the more intuitive "del" key to achieve the same result. However it also dangerous. It clashes with the very often used Firefox shortcut ctrl-t for opening a new tab, so if focus accidentally does not happen to be on Firefox, then this action will move to trash whatever was in focus on the desktop. I have just gone through a 2 day block level recovery of documents from a 200mb deleted folder because of this. A number of my colleagues also using Gnome have been caught out by this and I can see from web searches that it is a common pitfall. Other information: There's also an older bug raised about this which was closed as "invalid": http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156915 And I agree with the original submitter, this can not be called "reversible". It may only be reversible if you notice and are aware of the ctrl-t shortcut issue. And it's too big of a risk to leave it as such. What is wrong with just leaving it as "del" and no ctrl-t shortcut?
A bug report was also filled at ubuntu : [1] Just google around, people get sometimes tricked by this. I also agree this shortcut, less intuitive, should be removed. [1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/137638
