GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 47097
Shouldn't have "Open with..." in sidebar of GNOME-help URIs
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
1) Start Nautilus 2) Click on the Help menu 3) Navigate down to "Nautilus User Manual" 4) Click on the "Open with..." button in the sidebar. 5) The hugh size of the window is covered by bug 47096 Note that you aren't able to assign anything else to GNOME-help URIs because of the way we do GNOME-help URIs. i.e., pipe:gnome-db2html2%20'%2Fgnome%2Fshare%2Fgnome%2Fhelp%2Fnautilus-user-manual%2FC%2Fnautilus-user-manual.sgml'%3Bmime-type%3Dtext%2Fhtml isn't openable by anything but Nautilus. Perhaps they will be able to in the Star Trek future, but currently not. Josh ------- Additional Comments From darin@bentspoon.com 2001-02-27 10:48:37 ---- Didn't we add the code to gnome-vfs to make this work? ------- Additional Comments From jfleck@inkstain.net 2001-02-27 10:56:05 ---- Related to or identical to bugs #4106 and #6088. Adding Rebecka to cc list. She knows about this stuff. I thought this had gone away. ------- Additional Comments From rebecka@eazel.com 2001-02-27 14:02:20 ---- We did change gnome-vfs to not give back applications that will not successfully open for this file. However, we did not change the program chooser dialog for 1.0, and the "Open with..." button goes there. The time estimate for fixing this bug seems correct to me. ------- Additional Comments From don@eazel.com 2001-02-27 15:02:51 ---- P3 since Rebecca has the fix. ------- Additional Comments From jfleck@inkstain.net 2001-02-28 08:27:25 ---- I'm confused about what has been fixed here. On the specific case mentioned in the bug report, "Nautilus User Manual" from the menu, I still get an "open with" button in the sidebar panel. I do not *see* the "open with" when I call "Nautilus User Manual" from the sidebar help panel. But if I minimize the help panel in the sidebar, "open with" is there behind it. When I call for help from the help menu of an application, I get the "open with" button in the sidebar panel of the newly opened Nautilus window. When I type "help:appname" in the location bar, I get "open with buttons". In other words, I seem to be getting "open with" buttons in all help URI cases now. Hourly rpms: 200102280313 ------- Additional Comments From jfleck@inkstain.net 2001-03-03 18:46:51 ---- I'm reopening this, based on my comments above. This does not seem fixed to me. I get the "open with" button in all cases for all types of help files. ------- Additional Comments From mjs@noisehavoc.org 2001-03-04 06:52:39 ---- I don't think we should remove the "Open With..." button when viewing locations that happen to have no currently assigned app that can view them, since part of the purpose of the dialog it pops up is to let the user assign a new application that can view the given file. Suggest marking this WONTFIX or at least kicking it out of 1.0 for later consideration. ------- Additional Comments From jfleck@inkstain.net 2001-03-04 08:48:41 ---- Maciej makes a good point. Rather than marking WONTFIX, though, I'd suggest moving to 1.2 target milestone so the issue doesn't drop off of our radar screens. ------- Additional Comments From don@eazel.com 2001-03-04 12:48:53 ---- Agreed. Off to 1.2. ------- Additional Comments From rebecka@eazel.com 2001-03-06 12:04:43 ---- I just typed "help:control-center" into the nautilus location bar. I got back help for control-center, and then got some buttons in the sidebar. "Open with Lynx", "Open with Mozilla", etc., and "Open With." The buttons do what they claim, and I can open the help page with other viewers. It would be really helpful if I could get a specific uri: ie "type these characters" that will cause this problem. Also, note that the visibility of this problem may have changed because most help pages are no longer accessible from the nautilus help sidebar panel. ------- Additional Comments From dan@eazel.com 2001-03-06 13:04:48 ---- I think things are behaving properly, although I can see how it is confusing. Here are the common cases: 1) "help:nautilus-user-manual" - This is an SGML doc, so it gets this long ugly pipe URL. It also gets no "open with" buttons at all in the sidebar. This seems reasonable to me, as we have no other handlers for it. We could also argue that having "open with" in the sidebar would be okay, but I think it is fine this way. (Note: The long-term solution will be to get rid of the pipe and gnome-db2html2 and to have a real viewer for rendering XML docs. This will be GNOME 2.0, and it will make more sense to add back the "open with" button.) 2) "help:nautilus-quick-reference" - This is an HTML doc, so you get your normal batch of HTML viewers in the sidebar. 3) "info:automake" - (I can't test this now because info is broken in the build I have. Darin is fixing it.) 4) "man:pwd" - No buttons in sidebar. With the possible exception of "info:" which I can't test, I believe all of these are being handled properly. John - Could you confirm that the current behavior is okay and that this is ready to be closed again? ------- Additional Comments From jfleck@inkstain.net 2001-03-06 20:25:18 ---- I think this should be marked WORKSFORME or FIXED or BUYHACKERBEER or something. The original bug report that got this started is no longer there - the "oepn with" button in the sidebar when you call for help from the Nautilus help menu. ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2001-09-09 21:03 -------
Marking fixed. This bug has gone away.
