Description Michael Monreal 2007-08-19 21:58:53 UTC
Since my update to SVN trunk yesterday, the deskbar window always opens in the middle of the screen and then grows strangely... only for the first time I open it in a session, the next time it opens correctly at the place/size it was closed.

Would it be possible that you make a screencast of the "growing". E.g. you can use http://live.gnome.org/Istanbul to record one.
Comment 2 Michael Monreal 2007-08-20 17:54:45 UTC
I just meant, the window opens relatively small in the middle of the screen. Then, after a search, the window has to be resized and "jumps" a few hundred pixels to the top. This is caused by the now-forced centering of the dialog (which I learned was meant to be a feature..)

Anyway, if I move the deskbar window, the next time I open it (in that session) it opens "correctly" (not centered).

I think the centering is not a nice thing to have. Binding the window to a given spot on the screen was just what you didn't want when doing the new windowed UI, was it?
Comment 3 Michael Monreal 2007-08-27 19:36:32 UTC
Deskbar is really ugly to work with ATM...

This is due to
- the forced centering and
- the new behaviour of reducing the size of the window to the minimum

Please, revert this change as it is very buggy... perhaps this can be re-added as a preference later (for 2.21) but for now it just makes a good tool look very bad

Here's what happens all the time: I open deskbar, which has some results from a former query. I start to type a new query, the window resizes and I lose focus and type into another window. Very annoying!
Comment 5 Sebastian Pölsterl 2007-08-28 10:19:46 UTC
If you want to clear the entry the display after you have executed a action you can set the GConf key /apps/deskbar/clear_entry to TRUE.

Nevertheless, I can't reproduce this with latest Ubuntu gutsy.
Comment 6 Michael Monreal 2007-08-28 11:12:33 UTC
The clear_entry is not what I want, generally...

To reproduce:

- activate "select windows when the mouse moves over them" in the window preferences
- open deskbar and make sure there's an xterm or something unter the deskbar window
- resize the deskbar window to full size (simulating a previous search with many hits)
- now click into the search entry (the mouse now hovers over deskbar and the xterm is right under deskbar)
- type in the search

=> the window minimizes to it's initial size, then expand only if hits become available
Comment 7 Sebastian Pölsterl 2007-08-28 14:50:52 UTC
I see. Now I know what happens. Your cursor is at the top of the window and when the window shrinks the cursor is over the window in background. Therefore, Deskbar looses focus.

However, I followed your instructions but couldn't reproduce. Check the video I made.

Well, perhaps your PC is much faster then mine but for me, the window first goes small for 1-2 sec before hits become available...

Anyway, would it be so hard to add back the option to not have the window centered but opened wherever I choose to move and close it? (and have it only expand to the bottom, not also to the top). It would be so much nicer to use!
Comment 10 Michael Monreal 2007-09-06 20:05:05 UTC
Whoo! Thanks for reverting that patch, deskbar is so much more useful now! =)
This can be closed now ;)
