I'd prefer that mapping-daemon only run when actually needed, rather than all
the time.

Good idea.  Should be easy to do once we convert to D-Bus.

I think gvfsd-burn is only run on demand.

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
