GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 452764
Importing enhancements
Last modified: 2015-12-18 17:45:56 UTC
I'm a Linux fan and love photographing as well. I would love to see these enhancements implemented to make gThumb comparable to other photo managing software. 1. The current import routine create a folder based on the timestamp of importing. I would like to see a more usefull option added as well. Create a folder structure like "2007-06-28" and put in all images which are taken at this date according to the EXIF information. This make me less confuse where to look for images, especially when importing more than one memory card. Add options to create a structure starting with year and/or month: you get a folder tree like ../2007/2007-06-28/ and an option with the month in between: ../2007/06/2007-06-28. This will give more structure for finding photos and backup and when using more camera's all photos of the same day/event will be put into the same folder. 2. It would be nice to have a simple comment fields to add some more descriptive info in the folder name. "2007-06-28 Wedding xyz" in stead of the folder name only. If there is a one line field in the import screen giving this possibility, it saves time renaming folders to more useful names. It gives a better overview. When importing a second set of photo's from the same event/day, gThumb needs to ask to use this special named directory or that it needs to create a new folder. 3. Introduce an option to change the orignal filename from the camera to a standardised name. Especailly when using more camera's this is great. A textbox for customizing with some of the following options would be great: <TEXT>=Plain text, %D=full EXIF creation date (20070623), %N=independent auto increasing gThumb number, %O=Original number in filename. So, something like '<IMAGE_>%D<_>%N' would change an image name like IMG_1234.JPG into IMAGE_20070623_34000.JPG. It would be nice to have an option to change the 'auto increasing gThumb' number in the preference tab. 4. When viewing the directory after importing, probably the thumbs are created at that moment. It would be nice to create the thumbs during the import. This gives gThumb a faster feeling. 5. It would be great to have the possibility to import from a CD, zipfile, shares and folders as well. This gives the ability to import photos from other locations as well, with the possibility to make use of all import functions, like renaming, labelling, putting them in the same directory structure, etc. 6. When copying a file from Nautilus (or another program), there is no option 'pasting' the file into gThumb. It would be very convenient if this could be implemented. It would be even more interesting when pasting the file(s) in the importing routine when pressing ctrl-v. Dropping-and-dragging could be done in the same way. 7. Have an option to add some EXIF information of the photographer to all the photos, like name, address, email and copyright notice. 8. Create a new tab in the preferences window for default importing options, like 'directory, deleting imported photos, keep original filenames, rotate,..) 9. Current import window: Add between bracket 'lossless' behind 'Rotate images physically' to indicate for those not reading the manual that it is a lossless rotation. Linux: Ubuntu 7.04 gThumb: 2.10.2
These enhancements are "must haves", especially the 1. 2. and 3. The importing options are not enough. Thank you for this great tool !
(In reply to comment #1) > These enhancements are "must haves", especially the 1. 2. and 3. Umm, your patches are welcome then... 1. Has recently been implemented in trunk. Please try it. 2. Maybe, not sure. See the discussion in bug 431187. 3. Hmm... getting kind of complicated... The renaming tool exists to handle such things. - Mike
Michael, Thank you for you input. Please note that I'm very new to bugzilla in gnome project... I hadn't seen all bug reports yet and especially bug 431187. I never did any patching work in any opensource project, so I have a lot to learn if I want to propose anything... but there's a start to everything ;-) I'm not familiar with using the trunk, etc... but I'll try to give it a try (so to say..) Getting back to enhancements : 1. as said I'll try the trunk 2. looks like it's on the good way with bug 431187 3. the renaming tool is on thing, but it would be more efficient if done at import time. And why not have a similar more enhanced format string like for the directory naming.. ? Cheers, Matthias
Marking as obsolete, as the 2.x version are no longer supported. Please feel free to reopen this bug report if it describes a problem that still occurs with a current version of gThumb (currently 3.4.1).
