Description Kevin Smith 2007-06-29 12:33:10 UTC
Currently, new tabs are populated with the home page. Not only does that cause possibly pointless page loads, but it also causes the focus problems described in bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105153

This seems like an easy and obvious fix to what is clearly a popular problem (note how many duplicates have been filed). The only argument I have heard against it is that folks use the "Home Page" feature to bring up a search engine. There are two workarounds (use the built-in url-bar search feature, or press the "Home" button after creating a new tab), so I do not find that argument compelling.

An extension should not be required to "fix" this.

Apologies if this is a dupe. It is really hard to search for "new tab" when both have fewer than 4 letters. I tried every search I could think of. This is not the same as 429717, because that one requests the home page to be loaded but the URL bar to remain empty.

Indeed, this is a duplicate. As you can see, the original report contains an unfinished patch for a gconf preference. Feel free to clean it up and submit it for review. Thanks!
