GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 448345
Login with screen locked
Last modified: 2021-07-05 14:16:25 UTC
The following suggestion was made by Josh Triplett in http://bugs.debian.org/428617. It would require integration with gnome-session but I think it looks like something to look at. The idea is to be able to login with the screen locked. This way, you could enable autologin and would only have to type the password to obtain the full, up and running session. It requires integration with gnome-session to be done in a secure way. The session would have to refrain from loading anything with which the user can interact until a green light from gnome-screensaver. Once done, it could be made the default for autologin sessions (with GDM passing that information one way or another).
Thanks, Josselin, for forwarding this. One note: as a user of xscreensaver, I'd really like to see it work with that, not just gnome-screensaver.
This is also discussed here, https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/4443
(In reply to comment #1) > One note: as a user of xscreensaver, I'd really like to see it work with that, > not just gnome-screensaver. gnome-screensaver has matured somewhat since I wrote this comment. At this point, I could live with using gnome-screensaver to get this feature.
I see this happening as well, but i think it is a xorg or gtk+ issue.
(In reply to comment #4) > I see this happening as well, but i think it is a xorg or gtk+ issue. Do you have the right bugreport here? This bug represents a feature request about having gnome-screensaver and gdm cooperate to support autologin with the screen locked. If you have some bug where the screen locks when you don't want it to, you should file that as a separate bug report.
yes wrong bug. Should have gone to bed a bit sooner.
Reassigning to gnome-shell, as this might still be a valid RFE.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
