When creating or editing an account with type 'Maildir-format mail directories' Evolution shows a file-selection dialog instead of directory-selection dialog. That was what I saw :) or else I am too dummy to understand Gnome UI :) 

I had to temporarily set the path to a dummy file on my personal Maildir directory, then opened gconf-editor and changed the account path to the files's parent dir. After this, Evolution is now perfectly reading my Maildir message and folders.
