Description Bastien Nocera 2007-04-25 13:40:37 UTC
gnome-screensaver-2.18.0-7.fc7

The screensaver doesn't show anything, and doesn't say anything about the folder being empty.
Comment 1 Derick Rethans 2007-05-03 20:13:23 UTC
I've the same problem... however, it works fine if I call the program directly like:

/usr/lib/gnome-screensaver/gnome-screensaver/slideshow --location=Pictures

Both in the screen saver preview, as the real deal it doesn't work. The same is true for the cosmos slideshow.

What else can I look for regarding for clues with this?

Derick, I don't that that is related to this bug. I think this is about adding some text to indicate that the folder is empty. You should probably file a new bug if you have a problem.
Comment 3 Derick Rethans 2007-05-03 20:24:31 UTC
Will do that, thanks for the feedback.
Comment 4 xavier.bestel 2007-05-30 16:06:06 UTC
Hi,

worst, if ~/Pictures doesn't exist (it's my case), slideshow doesn't say anything and just stays black too. That's a serious discoverability issue, in fact I don't think many people can use it without asking on IRC or mailing-lists.

Thanks,
       Xav

The right thing would be to use the new freedesktop spec for user dirs.

Which doesn't change the fact that if the folder is empty, nothing will happen.
Comment 7 Mattias Eriksson 2007-05-31 10:31:46 UTC
Your right, as always :)

so it should use the user dir for the folder and not user the slideshow screensaver if there are nothing to show...
Comment 8 xavier.bestel 2007-05-31 12:01:22 UTC
I don't think so. I know it will hurt some, but there should be a user pref somewhere to specify where the pictures are stored - or at least accept pictures/directories drag-and-dropped on the gss prefs window.

Currently even I couldn't guess how this thing works.
Comment 9 William Jon McCann 2007-05-31 12:30:46 UTC
We already use XDG user directories to find the Pictures folder. Once again, this bug is about displaying some text when the folder is empty - just like in the OS X one.
Comment 10 William Jon McCann 2011-03-06 06:45:55 UTC
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
However, you are using a version that is too old and not supported anymore. GNOME developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes for the version that you use.

By upgrading to a newer version of GNOME you could receive bug fixes and new functionality. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain a newer version of GNOME.
Please feel free to reopen this bug if the problem still occurs with a newer version of GNOME.
