GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 417582
"Select Pattern" prompt should be inline
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:17:19 UTC
Hi, I generally dislike popup dialogs. I think it's bad for usability. (This is the main reason I switched from Gedit to Scribes by the way.) When a string pattern is searched/selected, any potential searched/selected string should NOT be hidden by any dialogs if possible. And it's possible. Why doesn't Nautilus put "Select Pattern" (Ctrl - s) in the location bar, just like the "Search" (Ctrl - f) function? "Select Pattern" might be too long, and not having "Help" might be a concern, but I think it can be solved by putting something like: Select [?]: [Enter a string pattern here] in the location bar. ([?] is a button for those who need help about what this function is.) I think this is more consistent and usable. Best, Satoshi Other information:

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
