GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 410118
Cannot import pictures from camera
Last modified: 2007-03-04 19:28:12 UTC
Please describe the problem: Since updating to 2.9.2 I cannot import any pictures from my camera (Nikon E5700 if that matters). The import dialog opens as it did before and the preview pictures are also shown. I can delete pictures from the camera through that dialog as well. Only when importing the pictures, the progress bar stands still at the first picture and never actually imports it (the new directory is created though). Steps to reproduce: 1. Open the import dialog 2. Chose a couple of pictures to import 3. click "import" button Actual results: It never imports the pictures Expected results: It should import the selected pictures and delte them afterwards (like it did <= 2.9.1) Does this happen every time? yes Other information: I did not compile gtkunique in, does that change anything?
Uh oh, something has gone very wrong, very recently... I can't even bring up the import dialog. I'll look into it... - Mike
Niels, Does it work if you re-install 2.9.1, or a previously known-good version? That would be useful to know, because there was a libgphoto update for FC6 on Jan 31/07 which might be the source of trouble. I am having the same trouble accessing my Digital Rebel (thumbnails shown, but import freezes). However, I can import from my card reader. Re-installing 2.9.1 does not make things work again for me. - Mike
The last time I imported photos was on 2007-02-01 and I'm pretty sure that I updated gphoto on 2007-01-31 (logwatch tells me so). I'm recompiling 2.9.1 at the moment and will report back after testing.
Ok, I reinstalled 2.9.1 and importing pictures works with that version. So it's likely not the gphoto update.
Oops, I've just realized that my camera-imports work fine - they are just extremely slow, so I thought they were freezing. (My card reader is USB2, my camera is USB1 - I forgot how big a speed difference there was.) So I can import just fine from my camera and my card reader. I can not actually reproduce your import problem... sorry for the confusion! I'll test my home camera tonight. We may have to wait and see if any other similar problems are reported. Maybe try compiling 2.9.2 again, if you feel like experimenting... - Mike
Are you using RAW images by any chance? - Mike
No, I use jpegs. BTW: I'm on 64 bit FC6, perhaps that makes a difference?
Well, I tested 2.9.2 at home with my other camera, and it works fine too (on FC6, 32 bit). I have gtkunique on some systems, and not on others - it does not make any difference to the importer. I don't see how 64-bit would affect anything. I would suggest cleaning out all libgphoto2 files from /usr, something like this: find /usr -name "*gphoto2*" | xargs rm -rf and then re-installing libgphoto2 from the tar files (not the rpm) using: ./configure --prefix=/usr make make install and then re-compiling gThumb 2.9.2 (after a "make clean"). Make sure the configure script says the libgphoto is present. Sometimes the tar-gthumb and the rpm-libgphoto2 don't recognize each other; I'm not sure why. - Mike
With 2.9.3 importing pictures works again for me. So this bug can be closed, I guess.
That's weird... Nothing really changed in the import code. Oh well, all's well that ends well... - Mike
Probably a duplicate of bug 414665. Workaround: use a destination folder name that has no characters that require escpaing. - Mike
