[ forwarded from http://bugs.debian.org/409437 ] The reffered menu should be called "Network" instead, or the no-internet software inside it moved somewhere else. Most of the software inside it is network related, and internet is just one possible application. Call everything internet is too Microsoft stuff. At my office we have our own intranet and all software inside it applies to it, but it is not internet. There are even some Bluetooth related software inside it from kdebluetooth package. Since when bluetooth is related to internet? It can be, but most of its applications are not. Thats a mess! I know there are "human interface questions" in order to decide by the name Internet. But I guess it is simply wrong here. I home someway this get fixed (my above way or another...). ======= Of course GNOME is not responsible for third-party applications adding themselves to this menu. However the category is named "network" and this is why applications use this keyword. You can't expect wireshark or tsclient to not use the "network" keyword.
I'm mixed here. I perfectly understand that Network is more "correct", but on the other hand, Internet is probably better understood by many people...
If you think "internet" is better, why not replace the "network" keyword or create a new keyword? This should be discussed with the xdg people, I guess.
Yeah, that would need discussion on xdg. But the fact that we already had the Network category makes me feel nobody will want to change the name of the category for compatibility reasons. Another possibility is to come up with a good query for the categories that will match internet software. Eg: Network and (Dialup or InstantMessaging or Chat or IRCClient or FileTransfer or News or P2P or Telephony or VideoConference or WebBrowser or WebDevelopment). Don't know if it makes sense... That would make sense indeed, but what would happen to applications not matching these categories? Should we make another menu named "Networking" or "Network tools"?
Sorry, yes, that was implied. We would have Internet and Network. But some people won't like this since this is a new toplevel menu. Don't know what's the best here...

Nobody raised it on the xdg list. This is where it would have to be discussed first.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).
