Description Vincent Untz 2007-01-10 19:38:10 UTC
I don't think we should have GNOME there, and I don't know whether people understand what "Control Center" means. I know that it doesn't seem right in french...
Comment 1 Thomas Wood 2007-01-10 23:05:13 UTC
Confirmed - I have suggested we rename it to simply "Control Center", but I agree this is less than optimal. Obviously, it is similar to "Control Panel" on Windows, so I suspect to some people may be obvious. Mac OS X calls it simply "System Preferences", which I suppose makes sense when you take the view of it being a set of preferences of your system.

"Control Center" would be an easy change since this string already exist in the .po files. We can discuss a deeper change further. But "GNOME Control Center" just don't follow the HIG.

I agree "Control Center" could (and should) be improved upon, but as long as we have a "System" category at least, "System Preferences" doesn't cut it, IMHO.

How about just "Preferences", or maybe even "Settings"?
Comment 6 Rodrigo Moya 2007-01-13 11:10:21 UTC
I like 'Preferences' or 'Settings'
Comment 7 Alberto Ruiz 2007-01-13 11:22:52 UTC
System->Preferences makes sense for me. In fact is the name of the current menu entry.

Can this be fixed for 2.18 yet?
Comment 8 Thomas Wood 2007-01-16 10:07:08 UTC
Let's at least get this fixed to remove the GNOME part of the name. We can then take a little longer to decide if there is a better name entirely.
Comment 9 Thomas Wood 2007-01-17 17:02:36 UTC
I've changed the name to Control Center for now, until we can reach a decision on a better name.

Has this discussion progressed? I think "Settings" is ideal.
Comment 12 Bastien Nocera 2010-09-29 13:21:40 UTC
It's now called "System Settings" in its title bar, and the desktop file is hidden by default.
