Description Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt) 2007-01-10 03:10:49 UTC
To navigate to a link with the keyboard in Internet Explorer 5.1 for Mac:
(I know nobody uses IE/Mac any more, but it's an interesting comparison)
1. Type a unique case-insensitive substring from the link text.
2. Press Return.

To navigate to a link with the keyboard in Firefox 2.0.0.1, Ubuntu 6.10:
1. Press the / key.
2. Type a unique case-insensitive substring from the link text.
3. Press Enter.

To navigate to a link with the keyboard in Epiphany 2.16.1, Ubuntu 6.10:
1. Press the / key.
2. Type a unique case-insensitive substring from the link text.
3. Press Tab.
4. Press Tab again.
5. Press Shift+Tab.
6. Press Enter.

This is both extremely slow and practically undiscoverable. I suggest eliminating steps 3, 4, and 5, and ideally step 1 too.

Actually it works for me without steps 3,4,5: press '/', type text, press enter.
The only problem is that you don't see the link is focused due to mozilla focus brokenness :(

We had a bug about autostarting typeaheadfind where we made it not autostart, bug 141963 ...

That's interesting. Sometimes it works for me without steps 3~5, but usually they're required. Still trying to work out why that is.

mpt, any progress?
Comment 4 Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt) 2007-02-18 05:17:27 UTC
Not yet, sorry.

moving out of NEEDINFO state.

This is like bug 595347 (which is about Webkit), so I'm marking this a duplicate. Ephy/Mozilla is a dead end.
