Description gnome 2007-01-08 09:54:19 UTC
When the totem-xine mozilla plugin encounters a format that it cannot play, an error dialog is popped up, which is pretty annoying when browsing websites with embedded movies here and there.

For example: http://player.omroep.nl/?zenid=230
has an embedded video (when the wma stream is selected) and brings up a dialog containing:

Totem could not play 'mms://livemedia2.omroep.nl/nosjournaal24-bb'.
Video codec 'Windows Media Video 9' is not handled. You might need to install additional plugins to be able to play some types of movies

totem-gstreamer just shows an empty window for the former stream.
This quicktime stream http://www.fahrenheit911.com/trailer/quicktime/large.php shows a similar error dialog in gstreamer-xine, but nicely displays a "quicktime required" logo for totem-gstreamer.

Proposed solution: show an error message inside the totem window saying the video could not be played.

totem ui mockup for handling an error

Here is a ui mockup for handling the error instead of popping up an error. I'd keep the error message small so it can still be read in small video windows inside a webpage, with an option to view more information: a link or button to the original error dialog for example. Maybe also a menu item to view the error for very small embedded windows.

Oh, bug 303942 may be related.

The URL from comment 0 works here in totem-plugin/gst svn trunk (with gst cvs trunk).

Not related at all, as it's about Totem itself, not the Browser plugin.

See also bug 359840 and bug 387332 for how we're thinking of handling errors.
