GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 386834
Misleading documentation: adding fonts
Last modified: 2006-12-20 10:39:12 UTC
Documentation Section: ghelp:///usr/share/gnome/help/user-guide/C/user-guide.xml?gosnautilus-1#goscustdesk-94 Adding a TrueType Font To add a TrueType font to your system, perform the following steps: 1.Open the Font preference tool by choosing Desktop → Preferences → Font in the top panel. 2. Click on Details. 3. Click on Go to font folder. The Fonts folder opens. 4. Open a file manager window and select the TrueType font that you want to add. 5. Copy the TrueType font file that you want to add to the Fonts folder. Correct version: There should be a 6th step explaining that the added font will only be visible in the fonts folder after a new login, but available to all newly started applications immediately. Other information: ALTERNATIVELY: The font-cache refresh should happen right when the font is dragged into the fonts folder (maybe there's a hook missing?), and the new font should appear at once. This is a usability issue for new users, and can create a surprising amount of confusion
> the added font will only be visible in the fonts folder after a new login, That sounds like bug to me -- have you / could you file that please? In the meantime, confirming this -- the manual should reflect the current application.
Also the documentation states that the open location command is under file, it isn't, it is under 'view'.
Thanks for the report. I've updated the documentation. Chris, could you file two bugs please, one for the Fonts folder not updating, and one for applications already running, then post the bug numbers here so I can track them? Thanks :) Bernhard: 'Open Location' is under File in spatial view, and as this is the default for Nautilus, it tends to be what we document. The link in that section goes to the section on spatial view. But I do think the whole way this is documented could be clearer: see bug 387855.
