GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 377409
No documentation on different input methods
Last modified: 2006-11-20 18:29:19 UTC
I simply couldn't find *any* information how to use different input methods. This is quite limiting mainly because it takes lot of trial and error to enter some special characters in some methods. I did find a nice documentation from gtk-im-extra page which could be used as an example... http://gtk-im-extra.sourceforge.net/imlatinplus-doc.html IMHO, it should be under User Guide -> Basic skills -> Keyboard Skills -> Input methods (?)
Hi. Thanks for your bug report. I've been aware of this gap in the User Guide for some time (bug 129110, which I'm marking this as a duplicate of). A new section on Input Methods needs two things: - an explanation of the concept in a simple manner that non-technical users can understand. (Or do only technically-minded users need to use IMs?) - some information on how to use actually the IMs that come with GNOME. I'd prefer it if this could cover all of them, or if those that we can't document could be removed. The problem is that I don't understand really what IMs are, so I can't write documentation that clearly explains them. For example, this sentence in the page you link to confuses me: 'The default input method for gtk+ allows the use of compose sequences' I'm using an input method all the time? I thought the compose key was maybe one example of an input method, but this seems to say not. Do all input methods use the compose key? Do some input methods provide other things, or can we say "an input method defines what the compose key does"? Help would be gratefully received :) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 129110 ***
