GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 370327
Window-listing is not grouping correctly in version 2.16 but was in previous versions
Last modified: 2007-06-17 16:31:05 UTC
Please describe the problem: When chosen to group windows belonging to current desktop, it incorrectly groups windows belonging to other desktops. Before upgrading to Fedora 6 with Gnome 2.16, this was working correctly, ie, Gnome grouped windows belong to the current desktop when asked to. Steps to reproduce: 1. Choose Preferences right-clicking the borders of the window-listing 2. There you'll find two options 1) show windows from current desktop & 2) show windows from all desktops. (Text back-translated for it's not in English.) 3. The problem is reproduced when 1) above is chosen but 2) is the resulting behavior. (Please see also last answer, for I copied back the old configuration files into the user folder.) Actual results: Out of the 2 options, 1) show windows from current desktop & 2) show windows from all desktops, 2) happens when 1) is chosen. Expected results: Option 1) says the user will not get windows from other desktops, only the current one. Does this happen every time? Yes, but in previous version it behaved as the options suggested. Other information: The problem has been seen after upgrading from Fedora 5 to 6 and copying back to old user folder directly with the old configuration files.
If I understand correctly, in group buttons, you get windows from all desktops instead of only the current desktop. I can't reproduce with 2.17.91. Does it still happen for you?
Al Class: Ping?
I think I made a bad description or perhaps it's my own fault of not configuring Gnome correctly. When I used Fedora 5, only windows in the current desktop were shown (in the window-list bar - I put that at the bottom of the screen). Now,with Fedora 6 and 7, some windows belonging to other desktops are shown (the feature I wish I could troubleshoot). Most importantly, it all came out of the box, I never reconfigured it either in Fedora 5, 6 or 7.
Which windows from other desktops are showns? Are they requiring attention? (ie, bold text, and a glowing effect on the button) If that's the case, then it's normal. If that's not the case, can you run "xprop | grep _NET_WM_DESKTOP" in a terminal, select a window that always appears in the tasklist and copy the output here? Thanks!
I understand it is normal now. But, back then, at Fedora 5 time (some Gnome versions ago), the grouping would only show windows belonging to the active (current / in-use) desktop. Let me give you an example. Suppose I open a pdf file with kpdf using desktop area 1. Alright, it's shown in the horizontal window-listing at the bottom (I always place it at screen bottom). When I move to, say, desktop area 4, it's there too, sometimes having a visual effect, a trimmering-blinking kind of effect. The problem -- if this should be a problem -- is that I preferred the way it worked in the past, ie, avoiding to show the kpdf (in the example shown above) in a different desktop other than the one it was opened. At any rate, I think this is not a problem if you consider that if I started using Fedora at version 6, I would have never noticed that difference. Thank you.
I think I made a mistake reopenning the bug. Sorry, that's not needed. It's my lack of practice with bugzilla...
Ah, the problem you're describing here is bug 400167. It happens for KDE apps. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 400167 ***
