GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 364411
Mistake in gcalctool doc
Last modified: 2006-10-24 07:43:52 UTC
That bug has been opened on https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gcalctool/+bug/67406 "The gcalctool doc says: "To enter a number in exponential format, use the guidelines in the following table: Number | Enter | Number Displayed 1200000000 | 12 Exp 8 = | 1200000000 -1200000000 | 12 Exp 8 = +/- | -1200000000 0.00000012 | 12 Exp 8 +/- | 1.2e-7 -0.00000012 | 12 Exp 8 +/- +/- | -1.2e-7" The instructions given in the last row do not work. "12 Exp 8 +/- = +/-" would work, but I think it makes more sense to enter "12 +/- Exp 8 +/-". http://librarian.launchpad.net/4921039/gcalctool-doc.patch Patch to fix doc http://librarian.launchpad.net/4921064/gcalctool-doc.patch Updated patch - Fix the text to match"

This is a known problem. The gcalctool documentation is two or three releases out of date. There is already a placeholder bug for all gcalctool documentation problems. This problem is already mentioned there. Closing as a duplicate of bug #309210. If you have further comments on this problem, please add them to bug #309210 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 309210 ***
Reopening -- I'm going to apply this patch, as it's here and I think we should encourage people who provide them. Assigning this to myself. I'll try to deal with this tonight.
Fair enough. Thanks. Would you be interested in fixing the numerous other problems with the gcalctool documentation?
I was going to ask the patch contributor on the Ubuntu bug (ok, shamelessly beg ;)
I've applied the patch, and I'll close this bug. However, the instructions and description only applies for arithmetic precedence mode (or non-, I can't figure out which).
