As in other image manipulation programs, gimp should be an 16 bit precision gray color maps. 16 bit paletized images could be supported too.

I'm working in a plugin to load satellite images into gimp, but image data need more precision that gimp supplies, and to colorize image regions i have thinked to transform into a indexed one, as in the photoshop.
