Ubuntu bug: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/58659

Frames now seem to appear around all children in a GtkStatusBar This didn't used to happen in previous versions of GTK (2.4->2.8 definitely, probably before also)

See Ubuntu bug for screenshots/more detail - will attach one here for reference.

from the distribution bug:

"I installed gtk2-engines 2.8.0-0ubuntu1, and after logging out and then in again, the problem is resolved! No more ugly frames where they don't belong."

reassigning and marking as fixed
