Description Luca Ferretti 2006-07-23 09:32:40 UTC
Please describe the problem:
It could be really useful to redraw data/stock_lock[|-broken|-ok|open] icons using the Tango style.

Reasons:
 * those icons are currently used by Epiphany and needed by Epiphany Tango switch (see bug # 348350)
 * here is a bug (from myself, I know) against icon naming standard asking for some security related status icon: when/if new named icons will be approved, we could simple rename stock_lock

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open www.gnome.org in Epiphany
2. Look in bottom left corner.
3. Open https://launchpad.net
4. Same as 2

Actual results:
The padlock open and closed icons don't follow Tango stile

Expected results:
The padlock open and closed icons should follow Tango stile

Does this happen every time?
Of course

Other information:
It could be great have those for 2.16 :-)

Security, not Privacy, sorry

As noted in the fd.o bug to add these names to the spec, we need more concrete definitions of what they are used for, and where, and why. Simply having generic lock icons, doesn't help. And I don't think they are appropriate metaphors for security, when they're used for so many other things as well. Will need more info before we can deal with this appropriately.
Comment 4 Luca Ferretti 2006-12-13 18:37:08 UTC
Updated summary. The icons are:

  * security-high [indicate that the security level of a connection is
known to be secure, using strong encryption and a valid certificate]

  * security-medium [indicate that the security level of a connection is
presumed to be secure, using strong encryption, and a certificate that
could not be automatically verified, but which the user has chosen to
      trust]

  * security-low [indicate that the security level of a connection is presumed
to be insecure, either by using weak encryption, or by using a certificate
that the could not be automatically verified, and which the user has not
      chosent to trust]

Phishing icons from Windows vista

A shield metaphor like this could be better then a lock?

In Epiphany those icons will be used in statusbar and in location entry at 16x16: could be helpful using different colors with same shape?
Comment 6 Rodney Dawes 2006-12-13 18:58:20 UTC
There needs to be some differentiator other than just color, of course. Notice how the windows security shield icons have ! or X in them as well. The only one that has no "emblem" embedded, is the green "ok" shield (see the Security Center in XP).

All icons are now on trunk. Closing the bug.

I just wanted to note that this part isn't fixed, since Epiphany had to revert to using the old non-tange icons since the new icons didn't just become tangoish, but also changed away from the lock metaphor.
