GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 345695
support normalizing audio
Last modified: 2012-04-23 17:03:43 UTC
totem shoudl normalizing audio tracks, since most DVDs are too quiet and/or differ a lot in their loudness. also there should be support for replay_gain information on audio files - if there not already is. (have not checked this)

This would be a useful feature. Movie files often have a very low default volume, requiring one to turn it up to (almost) maximum. If something else (pidgin or gtk/gnome for example) plays a sound effect after that, it'll blast your ears. So normalizing would be a good thing :)

Replay gain support should be added directly to playbin2, not in each application. And I'm not sure based upon what one would gauge the loudness of various movies. They're not as uniform as music can be, certainly. For the "too loud" problem, the best way would be to get the "night mode" implemented in PulseAudio: http://pulseaudio.org/ticket/931
