Got this as a wishlist bug for the debian package:

With gpm, one can set what he wants gpm to do when the lid is closed,
but there's no similar way to set what action you want when the power
button is pressed. It would be nice if that were possible.

Yes, that seems sane. You can already specify what you want to happen editing gconf, but probably a UI option seems sane.
