GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 341434
Don't return hundreds of search results (or tell me how many there are)
Last modified: 2006-05-28 18:40:57 UTC
It's wonderful to finally have search in Yelp! However, if I search for "resize panel", the resulting page begins with very large bold lettering saying "45 result(s) [sic] returned." Maybe if I was a statistics student or marketing person, doing a Web search, I'd be interested in the number of results returned for particular things. But if I'm an ordinary person looking for help on using my computer, I'm not going to be interested in the number of results. Ever. In fact, I'm probably not going to look beyond the sixth or seventh result at all. If I can't see what I want in the first screenful, I'll either try another search, or give up. So, I suggest that the number of results be limited to 20 or so, both to save rendering time and to encourage people to refine their searches rather than scrolling into oblivion. I also suggest that the results page have a much smaller heading: "Results for {thing you searched for}", with only the thing you searched for in bold, and no period at the end.
Moving to Search component
Patch from bug #341798 has been committed that returns at most 20 results and adds helpful messages. Closing.
