"Ttry to open a video / audio in totem and then click on another window. you'll notice that hotkeys are not working anymore (so they loose therir utility).
this happens with an

That's a known problem. Only one application can grab capture keys for itself. Running something like Rhythmbox and Totem would create problems as both applications would try to capture those keys.

It would require the ability to choose which application would get the keyboard bindings.
