Exchange Connector is plain missing from the OS-X release/build

Please describe the problem: Downloading and installing the brand new Evolution 2.6 build from the Novell and installing it. .exchange is not an option in creating a new account. This is verifed by the missing file .."GNOME_Evolution_Exchange_Storage_2.6.server" . .Given that the main feature of this release is the exchange connector - -that is missing alltogether. .I feel it prudent to enter this issue as a blocker.. I am using OS-X 10.6 / X11 from the Apple DVD ..running on a Macbook Pro (Intel) with 1.5 GB of RAM - wishing to connect to an exchange 2003 server.. Steps to reproduce: 1. Download the build from the Novell Website for Evolution 2.6 2. Install it on OS-X 3. Try to create an account to talk to an exchange server Actual results: Exchange is not an option to add an account Expected results: User must be able create an account for Does this happen every time? Yes Other information: Guys, this is probably the most undersold product of the year.. people are clamouring for an exchange client on the Mac and you ahve been sitting on one. .when everlitte item in the mac world gets huge press. Fix it and Digg it!
Sankar, can we fix the broken build and publish new packages?
ummm... probably a build issues. I probably did not copy the right build to /packaging. I really dont know if its just the .server file which is missing. Sankar: do this, drop the .server file in /packagaging/opt/gnome-2.14/lib/bonobo/servers/ zip it up drop it on a test box and see if it works. If it does, just give out the .server file and ask people to put it in their /opt/gnome-2.14/lib/bonobo/servers

Hi Guys, It's not just the .server file that's missing. I copied GNOME_Evolution_Exchange_Storage_2.6.server from a linux box (Ubuntu Dapper with Evolution 2.6) to lib/bonobo/servers here on my OS/X laptop (running XDarwin with darwinports Gnome 2.12.. I've copied some files around so I can run Evolution in this gnome and not have to run the gnome that comes with the OS/X Evolution package). It gave me an error of: (evolution-2.6:21466): evolution-shell-WARNING **: Cannot activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Exchange_Component:2.6': Couldn't spawn a new process:Failed to execute child process "/usr/lib/evolution/2.6/evolution-exchange-storage" (No such file or directory) This makes sense, since evolution-exchange-storage is in an different directory on OS/X. I could go into the .server file and change it to /opt/gnome-2.14/lib/evolution/2.6/evolution-exchange-storage, but... ejs@ejs:/opt $ find . -iname evolution-exchange-storage ejs@ejs:/opt $ There is no evolution-exchange-storage.
Any movement on this BLOCKER rated issue at all? As previously stated we mac users are CLAMORING for a good exchange client. I use Evo regularly on my Solaris desktop, and have grown to love it. If any testing of compilation, etc is needed I'll happily volunteer my G5 and give an ssh/vnc login to any developer or run a set of commands myself. I'm absolutely desperate for this software on my Mac(s).

A release will be made for Evolution-exchange in conjunction with the SLED 10 code-base and this will happen sometime in July beginning.
The above mentioned release will have this issue addressed.
Very disappointing. This has - very quickly - gone from "working" to "build problem" to "wait another 6 weeks". ...
Well now many weeks have passed ... is there a fix date on this yet? Or a url explaining how to get brutus evolution to work instead?
I'd also be keen to hear updates on this. An Exchange client for OS X would be hugely useful for me. Outlook is one of two apps at work that really tie me to Windows (and the other is written in Java!! I just have to convince IT to let me have access to the Mac version...)
I too would love to hear updates on this, we've been casting about for alternatives for our folks on OS X and this looked like a great opportunity! (so close...)

Reducing priority, as there are quite a few critical issues to be solved before making a release, irrespective of platform.
Its certainly not normal. I dont see your point really, i mean sure there are other issues which demand more attention than a mac build but that does not reduce the priority of this bug. Just let people know when the next release is gonna happen and leave the bug as critical. My two cents ofcourse
I too feel that this bug is critical. When we announce that we have released evolution for Mac and it fails to configure the account, it is a critical issue. Sankar, when we will be releasing it?
I have the current stable branch of Evolution built and running succesfully (with exchange support) on my Apple Powerbook. To make a release, there are a few issues that needs to be resolved. 1) Icons are not appearing. I am trying a few simple workarounds but none of them are complete. Sometimes the icons are missing for mail-folders and some times the Toolbar icons are missing. I need this issue to be resolved 2) Sometimes the connection of the Evolution to the background exchange process gets disconnected for some unknown reason. This happens in Linux too but the frequency of this is a bit higher in Mac. 3) The last issue is: Creation of the installer and QA certification before making the release. Since the Evolution on Mac is an unsupported release, I have been taking this with low priority than the other mailer issues. As of now, I havent finalized any specific date for this release. Also, I am considering an intermediate release without the first two issues addressed if I dont get enough time for fixing this.

It might be worthwhile to run a newer version of Orbit and check. Then in comment #7 Sankar promised a July release. Prospective users hung on that promise and it is natural we're dismayed to be let down again. The solution isn't to deprioritize this blocker; it's to fix it.
In the last few days i have come across this app in a year long search for a macintosh exchange client. only to find that after installing its basically another IMAP POP client very disappointing. as they are coming out of the wood work. If you got this out the door working then the entier market would be yours(evolution) for the taking as news that macs had a stable work exchange client would spead very fast as you would make a lot of people very happy as we could get away from that other client out there, you know the one the one. There is a gapping whole in this part of the mac mark that evolution could so easyaly fill. I have alot of users that would love to have a working client, as at moment its really hold back there day to day work..
Just so we are all clear...the time to strike is when the "iron is hot". People are nearly itching for the exchange connector to be properly built into the MAC OS X package. Given that it is a build error it shouldn't be that horrible to fix. Especially when a date was given, came and gone. All features and bug fixes aside, its going to hold this project back. I have ready about the agony people are going through to build this project on their own (including myself) because the current build of the latest release is only 98% incomplete (no exchange connector). I'd have promoted it to more mac users myself sooner but for this missing element. SO while is not a "critical" list to get the project working, its a feature people want to much it should really bump up the priority rating, especially if just fixing the build will fix it up. I guarantee you that it is the difference that is holding Mac users back right now and they are gaining market share (in spite of the hardware flaws, but people are truly getting sick of MS harassements with >=XP). So again, I'd strike while the iron is hot because if one waits, either someone else is going to do a new project and take "market share" from Evolution or interest from the Mac community is going to fade which would be a real shame.

The bug is still open and that signifies the fact that we are working on a fix and not towards getting it closed without a proper solution. Lowering priority is for the hackers to allocate time for right bugs and we accept that this needs to be fixed and will be fixed, shortly.

Installer for Evolution-2.6 for Mac OS X is uploaded at: http://forge.novell.com/modules/xfcontent/downloads.php/evolution/builds/Evolution%202.6%20for%20Mac%20OS%20X%20/ Try this and let me know if it fixes the "exchange not appearing in the list of servers" problem. Also, send me your feedback on your experience of Evolution on Mac. This is needed for the scheduling of Mac porting for upcoming releases of Evolution. Once you have downloaded and installed, you can launch evolution from a xterm window by running the launch_evolution script, which will be copied to /opt/gnome-2.14/bin folder. You may need to "chmod 777 launch_evolution" in case you did not get executable-rights for this script. There is a README file copied to the same /opt/gnome-2.14/bin directory which will explain a few ways for troubleshooting. Read it before running Evolution. There is one known problem which I could not resolve in this release. As soon as you launch evolution for the first time, it will come up with a account-configure dialog. Bye-pass this dialog by creating a dummy account with a dummy email address. Then as soon as the main Evolution window comes up, go to Edit->Plugins menu and enable "Exchange operations" plugin. Then create the desired exchagne account from Edit->Preferences. Another issue that one might get is: For the first time when an exchange account is configured, Evolution may give an error dialog "Connection lost" or on similar terms. No need to panic. Just restart Evolution. Things will work. These are all a few glitches in the Mac porting and will affect only until the first time access. After that, things should go smooth. Prior to starting the launch_evolution script from xterm, you can choose to run gnome-theme-manager ( from /sw/bin/gnome-theme-manager) to choose a theme that will resemble your Mac very much and wouldnt make evolution look like a stranger application. Setting a theme will ensure that your icons will get loaded properly. This release is NOT supported by Novell and you are using at your OWN risk. This will be the final release for the Evolution 2.6 on Mac. I will not be making another release for 2.6 unless there is any blocker with this release. If you find any such blocker issues with this release, notify me. If you find any other bugs with the product you can file them. However Mac specific bugs will be taken in low priority.
I will suggest using some download-accelerator to download the file. Since the installer is a bit bigger than usual this time.
Hi, I've tried the package on Mac OS X 10.3.9 and I've run into 3 things: 1. There is 2.6 and 2.6.1. 2.6 is apparently missing the BOM (Bill of Materials) so that won't run. (corrupt?) 2. Mac OS X 10.3.9. doesn't include the libXinerama.1.0.dylib library while 10.4 does. I've installed in manually by downloading the library from here: http://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.5.0/binaries/Darwin-ppc-5.x/ then after extracting it I copy the libXinerama.1.0.dylib library with the following: sudo cp libXinerama.1.0.dylib /usr/X11R6/lib/libXinerama.1.0.dylib sudo ln -s libXinerama.1.dylib sudo ln -s libXinerama.dylib From the I can at least get a dialog GUI up (note I have to run sudo /opt/gnome-2.14/bin/evolution-2.6) from the Xterm Now I get an error from the dialog and my Xterm reads: Gtk-WARNING **: Could not find the icon 'stock_mail'. The 'hicolor' theme was not found either, perhaps you need to install it. You can get a copy from: http://freedesktop.org/Software/icon-theme/releases so I guess the Mac OS X 10.3.9 has a few issues. I may be able to figure it out but if you have shortcuts it be much apprecated. And thanks for getting this build up.

Sorry if this seems lame but I can't get a theme to stick. When I click "Install Theme" (thinking maybe I need to add the "hicolor" theme it says the TAR program is not installed which is odd because I know it does from checking out the version. The gnome-theme-manager will start it and set an existing (which doesn't currently have hicolor as I can't install it with the manager GUI)theme, the application still won't run and gives the same error as above. Should I install hicolor manually and if so what is the proper way. Thanks. Once I can ge this baby to start I'll do more testing.
Sorry, misunderstanding.. the themes available "stick" they just don't allow the evolution application to run. Thanks again.
Okay, I got the application. I cleaned out everything and did a fresh install and run (basically removed all /sw and /opt contents and did a fresh install from the package unpacking with commandline tools instead of the stuffit tool. Then I ran the gnome-theme-manager and set the theme (glade in my case) and ran the application using "sudo bash launch_evolution). This got the welcome dialog/wizard to fun and it does show the Exchange Connector option but I don't have any calendar options, I cannot retrieve mail even though my settings are correct, the "okay" button on settings seems to not allow clicking when I try to change any setting (unless I restart then it will accept changes) and I notice the following on my xtem window when I start up the application: jonah% sudo bash launch_evolution (evolution-2.6:22912): Gtk-WARNING **: Could not find the icon 'stock_mail'. Okay, was still cracking at it. Here is what I got. I was able to receive e-mail on the email component (that and the contact components are still the only ones that will show up at the moment because of the error above) by doing the following: After removing and reinstalling and updating fink I installed the "bundle-gnome" using fink. (which is massive). Then I ran the gnome-theme-manager which showed all themes including the elusive hicolor theme evolution complained was missing and no complaints about "tar not installed" so I could install additional themes as normal (which I didn't because hicolor icons where there now), and all icons were present so I felt pretty good so far. I set a theme and ran the evolution installer. After running the evolution installer (clean install) the evolution application said I it was not configured for my environment but gave no other errors on the xterm, however it wouldn't start. On a hung I rebooted the system figuring there was cleanup work to be done. After restarting the OS a few things happened: gnomoe-theme-manager complained about not being able to find a multitude of icons (.png files) and lost the hicolor theme, the theme install button complained about tar not being installed again, and evolution could start with the same error I indicated above (multiple definitions of symbols of Bonobo components) and Evolution could download e-mails. Its a step in the right direction but I should have the calendar and memo components (if I could resolve this mutiple reference issue which I'm not sure why its there), and gnome-theme-manager shouldn't have trouble finding the icons (which do exist in the /sw/share directory) after rebooting. Does anyone know a way I can fix this? I'm sure the key is in the gnome environment on the Mac OS X (in my cas 10.3.9), but I'm not familiar with gnome to fix internals. Can anyone help me get this app running 100% on Mac OS 10.3.9. Thanks to any who can.
DL_COPMAT: I thought that wasn't needed since Panther? There seems to be multiple installs of the package. One which is fink installed cos, afaik gnome-bundle contains evo, e-d-s, gtkhtml and libsoup. I dont have a mac at my disposal so could you please check? If indeed they exist, then just remove them. This is how the mac installer works. The release uses fink packages internally and i think i stated that in the initial README, i think it still does. It installs all the fink packages in /sw/ and all the custom evo packages in /opt/gnome-2.14 (version may change). Now the app launcher just execs (/opt/gnome-2.14/bin/evolution-start.sh ) which is a shell script which initializes the various shell variables, checks if xterm is running if not runs an xterm and then runs /opt/gnome-2.14/bin/evolution-<version> What version of OSX are you running? http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/dlcompat tells me fink uses dlcompat as a dummy package, surely this seems like a fink setup issue.

This is due to an invalid BONOBO_ACTIVATION_PATH environment variable. Use the launch_evolution script that will be installed under /opt/gnome-2.14/bin always to start Evolution. This will set the above two environment variables. I have mentioned all these things in the README.txt under /opt/gnome-2.14/bin directory. For the calendar and memos not getting loaded, the problem as pointed out by Shreyas is due to multiple installations of eds (one through fink and another through this installer). So do a fink remove of evolution and evolution-data-server.
Sorry, i should have been clear, since comment comment #30 I alway used the "launch_evolution" command (instead of "./evolution-2.6") which I had to run with bash to get it to work. I have tried both "sudo bash launch_evolution" and "bash launch_evolution" with the same results. (before and after reboot in the last installation). Will continue to examine your last posting and see if I can see/fix anything else in my environment.
I did remove the afore mentioned packages from fink you mentioned: evolution 1.4, gtkhtml, were the only ones I saw, but I didn't see anything that said e-d-s (not sure that that is) and tired again: same result (multiple definitions of symbol). I also have tried removing the entire gnome-2.14 installation and gnome profile hidden directories (to ensure truly clean install) and removed fink entirely and reinstalled Evolution 2.6 using the package from scratch (without adding fink). I still get the same results (multiple definitions of symbol _Bonobo_Plugin_info) if there is a multiple definition of this plugin I'm not sure how my environment could be causing it now. Unless this application is using other libraries from outside the /opt and /sw directores I can't think of what else I Can do. ARe there any references perhaps through x11 libraries with the X-code tools from apple that may be affecting this? I did install the X11 SDK a week ago because Darwin Ports install package said I needed to add it. I know you guys spend a lot of time with this stuff which is why I've spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out how to get this install to work on my MAC OS X 10.3.9. I hope I've at least been able to help with your porting of this application for the MAC OS. Thanks.
After playing with this on a 10.4.7 install last night and this morning, some comments. First, you will definitely want to either run this on a clean install or nuke your DarwinPorts/Fink installs. It made things far easier on me, even though I will likely have to go back and reinstall a few handy things now. Also restarting after installing the Evolution package seems to have fixed some issues I had similar to some of the ones above. Finally, reading P. Sankar's(#26) post is absolutely essential as I missed the part where you have to enable the Exchange plugin initially and was getting frustrated. Reading IS fundamental after all. And some possible bugs/features I have noticed. This may be because I am on an older Mac and a touch impatient this morning(Dual 500Mhz G4). I believe this is an existing thing but the Exchange plugin seems to hang on a task randomly, so when you try to exit Evolution, it will just sit there and I will have to abort the process in the XTerm. Again, this may just be impatience on my part. Another thing is I don't believe the spell checking is working properly. This shows in the XTerm window when Evolution launches: (evolution-2.6:480): evolution-mail-WARNING **: Cannot activate OAFIID:GNOME_Spell_Dictionary:0.3 Spell Check is greyed out if you try to use it. I will try to add the package manually in my install to see if that will fix it. Calendaring seems to work fine thus far. Nothing else broken that I have seen. Very nicely done. Hope to see an OSX-Native Evolution 2.8 sometime soon. I can dream, right?
Ah the dictionary is an issue i remember, if i recall correctly, there is a bug in the makefile somewhere which makes evo look for spell-check.so (file) but on the system there is a spell-check.dylib, just move it to so and everything works. Well, if the gtk native port to mac takes off, porting evo should be a breeze.

The only things with spell-check in the name are in /sw/share/themes/. This is not really a problem for me, just something I wanted to point out.
Hi, I am closer to getting this to work than I was last time (when the connector wasn't available), but it's still not working for me. Sometimes when I go to add the new account for exchange, the OWA field shows up. However, in the times that it does show up, the "Forward" button is grayed out, and nothing I do will change this. When I add the account without entering the OWA, evolution will attempt to check for mail, however I get password errors as the user I enter always has an "@" placed after it, no matter if I include an "@" in the user name or not. Is there any way to edit a text file which would allow me to enter the OWA, etc.? I looked around in the hidden files in my home dir, but found nothing. Any help would be much appreciated.
Can this bug be closed ? Afaik nobody is actively working for OS-X support in Evolution development team.
