GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 337297
Allow keyboard shortcuts for smart bookmarks.
Last modified: 2016-09-29 09:16:30 UTC
Allow us specify a keyboard shortcut to go to the text field after "Search the web:". Currently the only way I can do it is: Ctrl-L, followed by Tab, followed by Shift-Tab. This is rediculous since Tab followed by Shift-Tab should go back to the original widget? Other information: Firefox uses Ctrl-K.
I agree with you about the ridiculous tabbing but the Search the web entry is just a smart bookmark so this would mean giving smart bookmarks shortcuts (that should be of course configurable). I would suggest you to just hit Control+L and the typying your search query and hitting enter or Go, this will search for those terms in google. You can also define a smart bookmark (go to your preferred search engine, search for something and bookmark the results page replacing 'your query' with %s in the url) for your favorite browser and press keypad to select it and search using it. I don't think that adding a shortcut for the smart bookmarks would be a bad idea but maybe it's not under the policy of epiphany. Any comments #epiphany?
Typing search terms as URL and in search box are two different things. The former is "I'm Feeling Lucky" search. I just noticed this is the smart bookmark feature. Then what I need is shortcut for smart bookmarks. Searching the web is so frequent an action.
Updating fields and modified Summary.
I came to bugzilla to report the same bug. I've put a smart bookmark field in the usual position (as seen in other browsers), right to the right of the location bar. I can't tab to this field, but I just discovered that ctrl-L ,right, right, left would select the field! (right and left referring to the arrow keys). Ridiculous indeed! Another issue is that I wanted a shorter name for my bookmark when it's there, since it was kind of obnoxious to have all of "Wikipedia EN" in the toolbar, and I had only one smart search in the toolbar. So I renamed it to merely "en", but that renamed the bookmark in the bookmar menu too.. sigh. And then, adding insult to injury, I duplicated the smart bookmark and added the short-named-one to the toolbar, but it would load the long-named one on launch since the URLs were identical or something! Talk about doing everything to annoy the user. I'm not totally incompetent to I rearranged some items in the query part of the string and it would accept the solution as the bookmarks were finally different with diff names and URLs... Fix it! (sorry to be so rude). But as seen in a community blog post [can't find the link], epiphany is now in the position where it has to catch up with all other browsers.
As always, patches are welcome...
Hi, the bookmarks code has been rewritten from scratch. When you have a convenient opportunity to test the new version of the code (which will be present in Epiphany 3.23.1) please check to see if your issue is still a problem, and reply here. Thanks!
I guess this is not relevant anymore since we got rid of any toolbars where we can place smart bookmarks on.
