Description lexual 2006-03-25 09:07:05 UTC
here is a feature in thunderbird that I find very useful when reading
mailing lists. I would like to suggest that this could be implemented in
evolution.

The feature is a that hitting "T" takes you to the next unread thread
and marks the currently viewed thread as read. There is also a menu
entry for this: Go->Next-Unread_Thread .

I imagine that this would be implemented with a different keyboard
shortcut.

I find that this very simple feature makes the reading of mailing lists
much easier. It avoids having to move through each message in a mailing
list thread that you aren't interested in, so that all the messages are
marked as read.

Other information:
This was first brought up at:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/evolution-list/2006-March/msg00188.html
And gained a few positive comments.

evolution has a "Go To -> Next Thread".
Hitting T is not an option, letter shortcuts without using "control" or something like that are not allowed according to the HIG, if i remember correctly.

if there is a menu entry in thunderbird called "Go->Next-Unread_Thread", this is even worst, because this does not tell you that it will mark the current thread as read. you can lose information by that.

this is an enhancement, but not a bug.

lex, any comments?

It doesn't matter whether the keystroke is "T" or something else, but I think it is important to have a keyboard shortcut for this.

I don't suppose it's that important that the function is Next_Unread_Thread as opposed to Next_Unread_Thread_And_Mark_This_One_As_Read.

I invite you to try out the thunderbird functionality and read the above mentioned mailing list thread. Being able to skip threads that the reader isn't interested in is important.

My main concern is making evolution less cumbersome for mailing list reading.

I think this issue has to be discussed with the devs. Then it'll turn out, whether this feature is worth to or reasonable to implement and the bug will set to NEW. Or it will be closed as WONTFIX.

I, for my part, don't care so much, because I use Space Bar to navigate through unread messages (which get sorted by thread automatically). But I feel that this might be a good feature for some people.

I'm sure this would improve my and my colleagues' day-to-day experience with Evolution. I'd really like to have such a shortcut (exactly the one proposed by lexual). This really helps going through mail threads, when you are subscribed to mailing lists with heavy traffic.

Evolution is slowly getting out of shortcuts. It would not be good to have some shortcuts with which one might break his/her fingers. For that I'd rather suggest to set the shortcut on the action on your own, which gtk supports without touching any application code.

Evolution currently (3.16.x) offers "Ignore thread" or eventually "Ignore subthread", which is more useful from my point of view. Due to that I'm closing this as WontFix.
