Description Laurent 2006-03-10 15:04:20 UTC
Hello,
I've some problem with Dia Install on Windows 98 second edition.
After install GTK+2.6.10-20050823 and restart the computer, i'm trying to Install Dia and I have the following message :
"Error! Can't initialize plug-ins directory. Please try again later"
And then, the install program stop.
Can you help me.
Thank's for all
Laurent
Comment 1 Wolfgang Stoeggl 2006-03-11 09:45:48 UTC
The problem is caused by version 2.13 of NSIS:

NSIS 2.14 release fixes a critical bug, introduced in version 2.13, that caused installers using plug-ins to fail loading on Windows 9x and NT. Upgrading from 2.13 is highly recommended.

Current version of NSIS is 2.15.

Wolfgang

Comment 3 Wolfgang Stoeggl 2006-03-13 08:06:56 UTC
I should have mentioned that the dia 0.95-pre4 installer was created with NSIS 2.13. Until a fixed installer is out, dia 0.95-pre4 can be installed on e.g. Windows XP and the dia folder copied to Windows 98 for testing.

That's good.
Thanks Wolfgang

Steffen: did you notice this bug and is pre7 using a newer NSIS version?
(Would have checked myself but sf.net seems to be sleeping at the moment ;))
Comment 6 Daniel Dickinson 2006-04-05 00:56:53 UTC
I have noticed the same bug with pre7 on Window 98 (1st ed). I've tried as far back as pre2 and gotten the same results. Unfortunately the machine I wanted it for is not available for testing, and I won't have a computer with 98 until I get some spare cash to buy a (legit) copy off eBay or something. Once that happens I'll be happy to test on 98 (probably 2nd edition).
Comment 7 Nux 2006-05-01 00:38:20 UTC
So is there a working version for Win98?

0.90-1 works, but nothing later that I tested (I skipped the pre and rc versions and just did releases).

Comment 9 Hans Breuer 2006-07-15 16:17:04 UTC
pushing forward to a still relevant version, *-pre* to be removed
(please close your bug if you can't reproduce with the released version)

If you mean this version:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dia-installer/dia-setup-0.95-1.zip?download

Then it's not working. Stil says the same thing about plug-ins dir. Maybe I could create this dir befire instaling by myself or something?

Another possibility is to use the 0.95.1 binaries in a zip file
that are provided:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=16768&package_id=69851

Sorry about the NSIS version - I somehow missed this. I'm using NSIS 2.17 now.

I can also confirm that this bug exists in dia-setup-0.95-1.exe when ran on an NT 4sp6 system. (This systems has other GTK+ apps. installed (Gimp, Gaim), if that's relevant.)

There's a discussion forum thread on this too:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1478743&forum_id=53187

I tried a manual install from the zip file, but running dia.exe or diaw.exe produced an error saying that libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll wasn't in my path, which is correct. (However it was already loaded into memory by Gaim. I though that short circuited searching for DLLs, but maybe I'm thinking of a feature that dates back to 16-bit Windows.)

The other apps. seem to find GTK+ fine, without it being in the path. Probably by consulting this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GTK\2.0\DllPath

RegMon showed Dia doesn't attempt to look for this or a similar key.

Modifying the path in a console window to include that path, then running dia.exe worked, but produced a stream of warnings:

(dia:641): Pango-WARNING **: Couldn't load font "MS Sans Serif 8" falling back to "Sans 8"

in the console window. Probably more path issues. More of these warnings are printed any time the UI is interacted with, and it seems to be making the UI sluggish.

If there isn't some magic quick fix that the Windows installer performs to avoid these issues (asside from adding the GTK+ DLL directory to the system's search path, which isn't the correct solution), I'll open a new ticket suggesting Dia consult the registry key.

I get this same error in win98, winme with the gimp when trying to save an image file that has text in it.
doesn't matter what version of the gimp I use.
I am installing the recommended stable gtk+-2.6.10-20050823-setup.exe
Comment 14 Steffen Macke 2007-07-06 18:45:25 UTC
Sorry for the late reply!

Is this still an issue?

I never owned a copy of Windows 98 or ME so I cannot reproduce the problem.

Are you still have problems of settings the right path to libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll?
In that case, it might be easier for you to grab all DLLs from the GTK+ installation and copy them to the dia\bin folder. Once you've done this, the DLLs
will be ok, but there might be other problems coming up.

If you cash up a sufficient donation, I could buy a Windows 98 license on eBay
and test things myself (though I cannot promise anything as the problems start
with the underlying libraries like glib, GTK+, etc.)

I am clueless how to report this bug to the GIMP project. This is not related ti dia, but I get the same problem. navigating through their project heirarchy to report a bug is seemingly impossible. Sorry for the cross-post. hmm. self help.
Comment 16 André Klapper 2008-06-19 20:18:29 UTC
Jim: just file a bug in this bugzilla against GIMP?! not that hard :)
Comment 17 Jim Michaels 2008-06-20 05:38:50 UTC
you can only file a bug report if you "supply a stack trace". I can't supply one.
for gimp you must use some unsupplied tool called bug buddy or someting like that.

and it's impossible to navigate bugzilla "new bug" for gimp. it's like trying to submit a bug report for SAP. I don't know what any of the main stuff is.
sorry, I am poor. I'll see what I can do tho.
Comment 18 Hans Breuer 2008-06-20 06:17:30 UTC
There is no need to file yet another duplicate of http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=112401

The GIMP people are well aware of the problem and they certainly accept bug reports without bug buddy or a stack trace. But providing just another duplicate of something which is documentated over the internet does not really help.

Hey folks,

I intend to close this bug report as no further information for the question in comment #14 has been provided. But as this is marked as a blocker, I'm not willing to do it without permission. Steffen, Hans: Would you close this bug as NEEDINFO?
Comment 20 Steffen Macke 2009-01-27 18:57:43 UTC
Summary if you want to use Dia on Windows 98 (to my best knowledge):

* Use Dia 0.94 - this is the last version that might run on Windows 98
* Use GTK+ 2.6
* If there is no binary zip distributon of Dia, you can use 7-Zip to extract
the content of the Installer *.exe-Files
* Windows 98 is not supported any more. There are no security updates!

No need to fix anything, as far as I can see.
