Description Gerald B Cox 2006-02-16 21:49:38 UTC
Please describe the problem:
When trying to use the copy down or copy right function which involves
highlighting cells and pressing CTRL-D or CTRL-R keys to copy the cells down or
to the right does not work.

Steps to reproduce:
1. By trying to use the COPY DOWN or COPY RIGHT FUNCTION
2.
3.

Actual results:
Cells are not copied down or copied right

Expected results:
Cells to be copied down or copied right

Does this happen every time?
Yes

Other information:
This hasn't worked for several releases and I finally got around to reporting.
It used to work.
Comment 1 Andreas J. Guelzow 2006-02-17 00:04:52 UTC
It works for me in 1.6.1 for single cell selections. I don't know whether it is supposed to work for multiple cell selection. (It would be nice if it did.)

Gerald could you be more specific as to what you are doing?
Comment 2 Gerald B Cox 2006-02-17 00:31:56 UTC
Thanks for the quick response.

I tried this on version 1.4.3 under Linux and 1.6.2 under windows. On both platforms it doesn't work.

Here is what I am doing.

1. I open a new spreadsheet (either in Linux or Windows, both display same behavior).
2. In cell A1 I enter the word "test" (without quotes)
3. I press the enter key
4. Active cell is now A2
5. I click with the left mouse button on cell A1
6. Cell A1 is now selected
7. I now press and hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse
down to cell A2
8. I release the left mouse button, cells A1 and A2 are selected
9. I then press the CTRL and d keys (CTRL+D)
10. Nothing happens.

What I expect to happen is that the word "test" will be copied down into
cell A2. If in step 7 above I dragged the mouse down to cell A10, I would expect the word "test" to be copied into cells A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8,
A9 and A10.

This used to work. I remember using it once upon a time when I first started using GNUMERIC - since it is a common function in Excel...but something happened and it no longer works.

Comment 3 Andreas J. Guelzow 2006-02-17 06:13:42 UTC
Copy down copies the content from the cell above the current selection. If you select A1 then there is nothing above A1 to copy down.

If you enter "test" in A1 and select A2 and copy down (dtrl D) the content of A1 will be copied into A2. That is the intended use. see bug 112847

There clearly is a problem in that if one selects A2:A10 and chooses copy down, nothing appears to happen. I would expect that copy down works also for selection of multiple cells.
Comment 4 Morten Welinder 2006-02-17 15:31:36 UTC
This is not how copy-down is currently working. Maybe it should be, but it
is not.

1. In A1 enter "test" and hit Enter.
2. Now in A2, press Ctrl-D.

==> "test" gets copied into A2.

...or...

1. In A1 enter "test" and hit Enter.
2. Select A1.
3. Press Ctrl-C. ["Copy"]
4. Select A1:A10
5. Press Ctrl-V. ["Paste"]

==> A1:A10 now filled with "test".

Does that solve your problems?

I tried your method and it indeed works. I read bug 112847 and to me it looked like this function was going to be added so it worked like excel. Did I mis-read?

Yes, that method works fine also. Thank you. The problem is that alot of folks I know use the copy-down copy-write function and we were all caught off guard by this behavior. I think this bug is a duplicate of 112847 so I am closing and I'll put a comment in 112847 pointing to this one. Thanks to both responders for the clarification/information. I appreciate it.
