The submitter doesn't state which version of gcalctool this is.
Presumably the latest (5.7.28).

I tried the steps above, followed by

and got the answer of 2.

This just looks like another variant of bug #136115 to me, and I'd
close it as a dup. of that, but I'm transferring to Sami for further 
evaluation and comment, as this is in his arithmetic operator precedence
code.
