GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 326423
A clear search button
Last modified: 2006-02-12 22:32:41 UTC
I'd like an X or something at the far right of the search input that clears what I've currently typed and updates my "hitlist" since clicking the searchfiled doesn't select the currently matched text I need to press Home, Shift+End and start typing again to get rid of it. It would be much better with a button that just clears everything or at least select the text currently there. Other information: This is using the latest version available from Ubuntu Dapper (cvs20060102)
While I agree whole heartedly with the bug reporter, it appears the developers have previously discussed such a feature and decided against it. See bug 128109. Can someone please mark as duplicate.
That has to be the most stupid decision ever. Look at iTunes, that's what you're trying to copy anyway. When you type something in the searchfield a small grey X appears, when clicked, it clears the searchfield. If I search for a particular artist that I want to play I search for it. When I'm tired of listening to that artist but don't have a preference to what I want to listen to next I press the X button and poof the next song will be selected from my whole library (current playlist) The discussion on the mailinglist conducted November 2003 looks like the target audience is my grandmother. She uses the stereo or the radio not the computer to listen to music.

Way to convince us, Dr. Diplomacy. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 128109 ***
I wasn't trying to convince you. My point is there wasn't even a discussion. Bastien Nocera: "After talking to Seth, we agreed that RB's main window was complicated enough, and that an entry like "View -> Show All" which would clear the browse and search entries would be the easiest and clearest way to go. Could apply easily in both iRadio and Library contexts. Colin, what do you reckon?" Colin: "Sounds like a good idea to me! Should only be a few lines of code in RBShell. Be sure to check rb_source_can_search to see whether the option should be enabled." I ask again: Complicated for whom? Who's the target? Who's the user? These are the options today: Click, Home, Shift+End, Delete. Or Click, Drag, Delete or even DoubleClick, Delete. Instead of just click. Heck I would even settle for Click, Delete. (if the text gets selected on focus like in Firefox). If you're not left handed you probably have to move your hand from your mouse to the keyboard to achieve the desired effect. Instead of just clicking once on a button. Searching in the View menu never occured to me, why would I want to go to a menu to clear out the textfield? What it boils down to is Bastian and Seth deciding on something based on what the interface looked like 2003, the interface as evolved quite a lot since then. The que has appeared and that sure as **** made the interface more clutered than before. Renaming Search to Filter could also be a solution, since you're not actually searching you are creating a better filter with each letter you put down.
