Description Aaron 2005-12-22 14:47:15 UTC
Please describe the problem:
When I lock a layer's alpha channel, and then try to use the Paintbrush or
Pencil tools, it does not draw a circular brush shape. Instead, it draws a hard
square shape with the same diameter as the brush.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new image, ordinary size
2. Duplicate the background layer
3. Lock the alpha channel on the new layer
4. Using a circular brush, draw with the pencil or paintbrush tool in this layer.

Actual results:
The strokes are drawn with a square shape with the same diameter as the circular
brush.

Expected results:
The strokes should be drawn with the shape corresponding to the selected brush.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

I could not reproduce this in CVS (HEAD minus a week). Aaron, please, input more details, like what enviroment are you running on, were did you get your binaries (or did you compile the GIMP yourself, and so on.

Also try different settings like image size, changing the overall opacity of the new layer (layers->colors->curves->alpha channel) before locking the alpha and painting on it, different colors, different paint modes, and even different layer combination modes - try to see if any of these combinations will "turn the bug off" for you.

I am running Windows XP, using precompiled 2.3.5 binaries I installed from a file called "gimp-2.3.5-setup-1.exe" which I found somewhere online today but can't find anymore.

According to Control Panel, I am using GTK+ v2.8.9 runtime environment, if that helps any.

I uninstalled GIMP v2.2.9 prior to installing v2.3.5. However, upon installing v2.3.5 it detected old brush files, and prompted me to import them, which I did.

I tried changing opacity and different layer modes as you suggested, but there was no change. Image size also did not affect anything. Airbrush, pen, and pencil tools are affected, although the eraser still works properly.

New brushes I create are also affected. I tried creating a variety of brushes and all of the new brushes are also drawn as squares.

If you can't reproduce this then it might just be a fluke in the order in which I uninstalled/reinstalled the new versions of GTK and GIMP.

I can't reproduce this with current CVS on Win32, and bug 307213 was fixed shortly after 2.3.5 was released.
