GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 323676
Network places and mounts shouldn't be in "Computer"
Last modified: 2009-03-09 11:48:28 UTC
It seems rather odd that clicking on "Computer" on the desktop brings out a window with different hardware parts of your computer, but also a bunch of remote shares you've mounted before and such. It seems rather unintuitive that network related things recide in Computer. Where should they be placed instead? Well, first of all, they are already in the Places menu. But perhaps they should be placed in the network:/// folder. This in turn could be placed on the desktop with quick access to all kinds of network places. This would be similar to what Windows has, but combined with the powers of gnome-vfs. Not sure where to file such a "bug", if this is the wrong place, please reassign it.

Reopening since the duplicate is not quite about what this bug asked for. > In that bug, I also requested that all network mounts be removed from Computer, > not only the network:/// folder, but also the FTP shares that recide directly in > Computer. I would like all network-related places to be in the network:/// > folder, that will now be placed at the desktop.
They're inside the computer as once mounted they're accessible as any other volume would be (to a certain extent). This is pretty standard throughout both Linux and Windows (mapped/mounted network shares in Windows are displayed in My Computer along with their local device name (letter)). Once a share is mounted it's mapped to a local virtualized device, thus it appears in the computer. Changed to enhancement.
Either way it's not a Nautilus bug, it was a GnomeVFS bug, it's now a GVFS bug. But I'm not 100% sold on the idea that shares should be in network:/// and not computer:///. It would definitely be a huge break from the way we currently do things, and it would be visibly different from Windows (as noted above) and Mac OS X (which doesn't really have an analog, but the point stands). But it somewhat makes sense to differentiate the kinds of mounts from each other, hardware mounts vs. network mounts. Anyways, reassigning to GVFS, we can decide on it from there.
This is not a bug, but has been the design since the start. Computer contains the current "mounts" that are accessible from this computer (actually this session). Network is for searching the network for mountable shares.
