GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 322828
Kill thumbnailers on unmount
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:30:30 UTC
This bug has been opened here: http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=18695 "totem-video-thumbnailer as gnome-video-thumbnailer (probably any thumbnailer) keeps a removable disk busy even when no nautilus window is showing the folder's contents, preventing to eject the disk. This can be annoying if you're browsing through a collection of discs. Steps to reproduce: 1. Insert a CD/DVD with eg. video files in the root (something that takes a while to thumbnail). 2. Nautilus opens a window w/ the disc's root folder. Close this window. 3. Right-click on the disc icon on desktop, choose Eject -> the disc refuses to eject 4. pfp@worf:~$ sudo fuser -muv /media/cdrom0 USER PID ACCESS COMMAND /media/cdrom0 pfp 18779 f.... gnome-video-thu pfp@worf:~$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/gnome-video-thumbnailer lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 2005-10-15 12:14 /etc/alternatives/gnome-video-thumbnailer -> /usr/bin/totem-video-thumbnailer* totem-xine is version 1.2.0-0ubuntu3. This is related to (or maybe duplicate of) http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=147423 To clarify: once the thumbnails are complete, totem-video-thumbnailer exits nicely, releasing the device. The problem is that this can take a while (tens of seconds)."
I think that "Severity" should be pushed to Normal, since it is quite annoying when you mount a slow device, like a cdrom or a photocamera, filled with images (I mean a lot of them), and you have to wait gnome-video-thumbnailer to finish building all those little nice thumbnails before being able to unmount the device. Even if you have closed Nautilus window.
Still an issue, updating version, confirming.
Well, for images, it's not Totem's fault. As for the rest, gnome_thumbnail_factory_generate_thumbnail() doesn't look like it can be cancelled, making it hard for nautilus to do anything about.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
