Description Matthias Clasen 2005-11-22 19:10:38 UTC
The current menu name, "System Monitor", has two weaknesses:
- It repeats "System" from the name of the menu it is contained in
- "Monitor" clashes with the use of Monitor for the display

A proposal we came up with was "Processes & Resources", which picks up
the labels from the first two tabs. Having the technical term "Processes" in the
menu name is not perfect, but still better than "System Monitor", IMO. It will
also fit in better when we move gnome-system-monitor and the other monitoring
applications from Applications > System Tools to System > Administration, which
we consider doing for FC5. I believe Ubuntu has similar plans for their next
release.

I'm sorry that 'monitor' has both usage in English :)

OSX uses 'Activity monitor'.
Windows 'Task manager'.
KDE 'KSysGuard' (ouch).

'Processes & Resources' sounds a bit too technical to me. But if you really want this, do it. gnome-system-monitor remains procman in my heart :)
Comment 3 Karl Lattimer 2008-01-03 14:14:24 UTC
I agree with this, maybe the translations should be different but as an english native it took me a week to find activity monitor after I started using OSX and Task manager, well I grew up with it so its embedded in my skull somewhere.

Either way, System Monitor does imply that its the display attached to the computer rather than something which monitors the system.

Can we push this through for 2.14.5?
Comment 4 Chris Kühl 2011-02-24 11:46:05 UTC
Have we come up with anything better yet? Not really so keen on "Processes & Resources" but I understand the problem with "System Monitor." For lack of a better suggestion, I'd be willing to change this to "Processes & Resources."

Bug #322164 suggests using Performance Monitor, which sounds fine for me, regardless of the fact that the arguments against System Monitor are not valid anymore (Monitors is now Displays and System Monitor does not duplicate System from the System menu as in Gnome Shell there is no System menu anymore.)

Roth, I think you mean Bug #375669. I don't like Performance Monitor at all. I think it misrepresents the functionality that this app provides the user. Also, the point of this bug was to change the ambiguous term "Monitor."

In the end, no one has yet to come up with anything better than "System Monitor." I'd like to keep this bug open for new suggestions but will probably close as NOTABUG if no better suggestions come forth.

@Chris: I'm OK with closing this as not a bug, as the reasons specified for changing the name are not valid anymore, as I have pointed out above. And please call me Robert :) (in some countries First Name and last name are reversed - so my first name is Robert - also updated my bugzilla profile).

I'll write a note to close this in a week if no one has chimed in with anything better.

And

Roger that. ;)

Closing this as promised above.
