Description Sjoerd Simons 2005-11-21 13:47:53 UTC
Hi,

Gossip 0.8 had close button in the tabs, just like epiphany.. In gossip 0.9
they are no longer there.. I personally find that quite annoying (i used them a
lot) and some other i've spoken too felt the same way.
Comment 1 Martyn Russell 2005-11-21 14:00:39 UTC
I wouldn't do this on the actual tab because it uses up too much space.

Unlike a browser, a chat window is not a huge proportion of the screen usage so
the names are already squeezed up.

What I wouldn't mind doing is having the 'x' on the far right of all the tabs
like Firefox does it.

I want some more opinions on this before I even think about doing anything
since, this is quite a sensitive area to bugger around with.

There is always Ctrl+W to close the tab too ;)
Comment 2 Maciej Katafiasz 2005-12-03 13:00:06 UTC
Please provide some easy means to close them. Really. I was very confused after
upgrading to 0.9, I don't want to think about non-geek users. I have seen "OK"
button be too big an obstacle. Ctrl+W is not a solution, as is not removing the
old working way without thinking up new one.
Comment 3 Mikael Hallendal 2005-12-04 10:24:25 UTC
Maciej, I don't understand much of what you try to say in your comment.

Sjoerd, Martyn: I agree that we should have some way of doing it more than
Ctrl+w, we tried this and it didn't exactly work out too well. Having them in
the tabs are not really an option either since it's using too much space.

There are really two options, one is to do like Firefox to have one X button
that closes the current tab, personally I've always found this a bit confusing
(especially if you are using to the way it's done in Epiphany).

The other is to have the X below the tabs and above the text area. I've been
thinking some of having a row there that can contain other information (like
some from the vCard, a photo (avatar) of the other person etc.) To the right we
can have an X button that closes the tab.
Comment 4 Martyn Russell 2005-12-04 18:09:13 UTC
Yea I like that idea and think it could work!

I guess you could include the users status message in in that area below the tab
with the 'X' button too - does that would like a good idea? I am just worried
about using up a whole load of space for just an 'X' since we don't support
avatars yet.
Comment 5 Richard Hult 2006-02-24 17:15:02 UTC
I wouldn't mind bringing back the button until we have another solution for it. It doesn't take up that much space, just 2-3 letters worth of it.
Comment 6 Martyn Russell 2006-02-24 19:33:20 UTC
Committed.
Comment 7 Richard Hult 2006-02-24 20:11:56 UTC
I just committed a small tweak to this to make the button smaller so it doesn't add to the height of the tab.
Comment 8 Mikael Hallendal 2006-04-16 15:53:51 UTC
Hmm, just to bring this up again, and I do think it takes up quite a bit of space in a window with four-five tabs.

A solution that they use in Adium which works pretty well after you have discovered it is to have the presence icon change into a close button when hovered over.
Comment 9 Martyn Russell 2006-04-16 17:52:54 UTC
Yea, Richard told me about this not long ago, we both thought it was a good idea, we just need to do it I guess :)
Comment 10 Martyn Russell 2006-04-17 12:12:21 UTC
OK, I have implemented something based on your comments Micke and from what Richard told me too, see what you think.
Comment 11 Mikael Hallendal 2006-04-17 17:13:47 UTC
Yeah, that's exactly how I meant. I think it works pretty well once you know it's there. However it is a bit non-standard but a good way of using a small amount of space.
