GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 317532
evince excessively slow, formulas
Last modified: 2006-08-28 01:09:33 UTC
Please describe the problem: Evince takes excessively long to render page 6 of the document at http://www.cast.cse.ohio-state.edu/exscal/content/Publications/LOF-TR.pdf which contains a bunch of formulas. Steps to reproduce: 1. download the file 2. go to page 6 Actual results: I need to wait several minutes before I see something Expected results: Pretty much instant display :) Does this happen every time? Yes. Other information:
I can confirm this bug with evince 0.4.0 / poppler 0.4.2 (cairo). Marking as NEW.
I've got an entire document (draft, not-for-release, unfortunately) with text displaying poorly, the way the equations on page 6 do. It takes most of a minute to render even the first pass of the first page, on my opteron. Profiling on this document (though I'm new to this profiling tool and may be wrong) is suggesting to me that most of this time is spent in cairo doing transformed pixel fetching. But I'm guessing the blame doesn't really lie there, since there's also the bad rendering.
I have similar problems with this pdf document. The first eleven pages render correctly, but on page twelve where the Go diagrams starts, Evince takes a very long time to render anything. http://www.wingsgoclub.org/books/go-seigen-book.pdf Using Evince 0.4.0 and libpoppler 0.5.0.
It's rather fast now, but rather ugly as well, it's a known problem with type3 fonts. See http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4332 for example.
