Description Floris Kruisselbrink 2005-09-13 12:44:48 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Certain pdf files seem to cause evince to hang: use 100% cpu and I think it's
leaking memory here.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Download http://onderwijs.cs.utwente.nl/pdf_documenten/rooster_INF_B1.pdf
2. Open it in evince
3. Tada, 100% cpu load and memory consumption increasing drastically

Actual results:
Evince actually manages to display a very poor quality first page, but memory
usage increases from 10MB to 20MB in half a minute, for a pdf of nearly 30kB
quite a lot (the 10MB already)! I didn't wait any further but closed evince
before my VM would.

Expected results:
Another pdf reader, for example, gv and acrobat reader display the file
correctly with no problem.

Does this happen every time?
Yes

I see the slowness too, although here - it actually opens the file after a while.
But yes - it's way to slow.
I think this is a poppler bug, could you please supply the poppler version and
type? I have "poppler 0.4.2 (cairo)". You can find it in the Help->About menu in
Evince.

There were a bunch of poppler bugs filed about this problem, with other PDF's,
but their bugzilla is kind of crashed right now, so I can't point you to it.
Comment 2 Floris Kruisselbrink 2005-09-18 11:07:39 UTC
I also have poppler 0.4.2 (cairo).

I'm using the ubuntu breezy packages of gnome 2.12, my computer is an AMD Athlon
1333 MHz, 512MB RAM. Not the newest computer, but IMHO it should be fast enough
to render pdf documents!

Hi, this looks like a bug with the PDF backend. Could you please follow these
instructions to help get this
 bug fixed. Thank You. http://live.gnome.org/Evince/PopplerBugs#poppler
