sorry, I forgot to mention the version of gcalctool: The bug appeared in 5.6.21.

Thanks Christian!  Changes checked into CVS HEAD.
Version number in configure.in bumped to 5.6.24.
As this is a crasher, I'll generate a new gcalctool
tarball release too.
