Steps to reproduce:
1. initiate application
2. choose  file-open
3. choose  drive (c:) error occurs immediately

basic text of error is "Pango-ERROR file shape.c  line 75(pango_shape) 
assertion failed: (glyphs>num_glyphs>0)     aborting ......

This has been reported about a hundred times.  It seems to have various causes,
and various solutions -- changing your GIMP theme from "default" to "small" in
the Preferences might work around it for you.  Or not.
