GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 310154
Similar genres should be combined
Last modified: 2018-05-24 10:44:37 UTC
I have "Newage", "newage", and "New Age" genres. They are listed separatedly but should really be combined into one. Maybe the genre list should really a tree where the top level combines similar genres. For the example above, this would should up as "Newage" (the first one?) and its children would be the three versions. Another example of where this is useful is for crossover genres. For example, I have "Techno", "Techno-Industrial", and "Industrial". Under the "Techno" main item would be both "Techno" and "Techno-Industrial". Under the "Industrial" item would be "Industrial" and "Techno-Industrial". I know this would not be completely fool proof. But it would definately set rhythmbox apart for iTunes and others. If my explanation is not clear enough, please contact me.
This is really a special case of sort tags and the band sorting problem, see bug #133444 and the mailing list thread: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/rhythmbox-devel/2006-February/thread.html#00055 In particular: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/rhythmbox-devel/2006-February/msg00089.html A workaround is simply create automatic playlists that contain multiple genre criteria for each of the minor variations. I think creating hierarchies for multiple genres is too hard a problem in general and is probably best handled by arbitrary metadata (like flikr or f-spot), see: bug #330259.
[ From http://bugs.debian.org/425113 ] This is a big problem for the Jamendo plugin, and other places where you can't control what genre is used. For example; "Electro-Dub" "Electro-dub" "Electro Dub" "Electro-dub " (Yes, that's an extra space) "électro-dub" In the long run, tags would probably solve this problem.

this is a real bummer, especially if you have no influence on the genre e.g. from a store :-(
